About our group | Mō te roopu 

 

The purpose of the Hazardous Substances & New Organisms Group is to manage consent application and reassessment processes.  

 

This role includes providing advice and support to applicants and delegated decision makers, and to conduct delegated decision making for the manufacture and import of hazardous substances, the import or release of new organisms; the reassessment of hazardous substances; the import and export of hazardous waste and ozone depleting substances; liaison with a range of stakeholders (including submitters, applicants and other government and international agencies) on statutory decision making.

This role is based in our Wellington office. While we're happy to consider work-from-home arrangements, this role is not designed for full-time remote working. 

 

Typical day in the life of this role 

 

As a Senior Advisor, you will be required to manage a busy workload of projects, work across a range of legislation and work streams, and contribute to the success of the EPA. You will be required to build strong and positive connections with stakeholders and across the EPA. 

 

Current areas of primary focus 

 

The Inhibitors team delivers advice to decision makers on the regulation of agricultural inhibitors, including methane and nitrogen inhibitors.  

If you have experience and skills in hazardous substances regulation, environmental management, or agricultural or regulatory science, this is the role for you. 

 

 

About you | Mōhou ake 

 

We are looking for someone with a range of skills and experience – if you have some or all of the below, we would love to hear from you. 

 

  • Strong experience in regulatory systems or environmental science, with relevant tertiary qualification or equivalent experience 

  • Experience working with legislation such as the Hazardous Substances and New Organisms Act 1996, or similar regulatory frameworks 

  • Proven ability to provide high-quality technical, scientific, or regulatory advice to decision makers 

  • Excellent communication, relationship-building, and reporting skills, with a strong customer focus 

  • Ability to lead or contribute to complex pieces of work, while supporting and coaching others 

  • Strong analytical skills, including the ability to interpret complex technical information, identify risks, and communicate insights clearly 

  • Highly organised and self-motivated, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deliver results under pressure 

  • Strong attention to detail, combined with sound judgement and a pragmatic, solutions-focused approach 

 

Every day is different in this role, so you will need to be adaptable, resilient, and comfortable working across a variety of complex and evolving workstreams.

Salary range 

 

$90,801 - $136,201 per annum (midpoint $113,501).  

 

This is the full salary range of the band, from 80% - 120%. Appointments will generally be made at or below the midpoint of this range, depending on skills and experience.
